  • Position Overview

    Major Responsibilities:


    The Accessioner is responsible for general support functions within the Accessioning Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to accessioning manual and electronic requisition, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging, centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner. Job is complex and requires that employee have good organization skills and is able to learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by client. The accessioner must have the ability to learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering. Additionally, flexibility in work schedule and/or function is required in order to meet team oriented goals. The accessioner may be involved in more complex processing which could include but not limited; Priority Accounts, Frozen splits, Send outs, Cytology and Microbiology processing. Based on the department operational needs, accessioner must have the ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime maybe required. Department is a team oriented environment, with emphasis on productivity/quality standards and meet the department goals and objectives.



    • Responsible for all responsibilities of the Accessioner.
    • Demonstrates an ability to learn the job duties assigned to the accessioner, and develops an understanding of how all the functions in Accessioning fit together.
    • Identifies problems with specimen types, missing information etc. And assigns the appropriate TIQ, and in some cases resolves them.
    • Prepares laboratory specimens for designated departments/location prior to laboratory analysis and testing.
    • Prepares excess specimen samples for storage and resolves and document problem specimens.
    • Prepares all specimens received for testing in designated laboratory departments or locations such as staging of specimens, centrifuge, separate serum, and blood smears.
    • Aliquots sample for departments.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of the compliance policies related to test ordering, which requires developing ability to research test ordering information on translation tables, computer system, and the directory of services.
    • Meets the production standards and accuracy within 6 months. The department production standard of 40 requisitions per hour or the department goal of 45 requisitions per hour.
    • Understands the complex relationship between test(s) ordered and specimen received.
    • Completes all required written documentation, legibly and within the assigned time frame.
    • Reports to work on time, and follow attendance guidelines.
    • Learns additional functions within Accessioning to allow timely progression the next level.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
